Defibrillators now ready to go!

Blandford RFC received training on Wednesday 16th of July on how to use their Defibrillators.

Back on the 1st of December (during the rugby season) Jojo Wylde and her team organised an afternoon tea and auction to raise money to buy two defibrillators, one for the clubhouse in the town centre and one for up at the club's new pitches at Larksmead Recreation Ground.

On the day over £2750 was raised which covered the cost of buying the Defibrillators and getting the training.

Chairman Justin Frampton said ‘ this was an idea of one of our members Jojo and with her organisation and help from friends, the money was raised for the defibs, I believe we are one of the only clubs to have these in Dorset and Wilts and although we hope never to have to use them, I feel it is very important to have them in case, they can be used on all age groups.’

The defibrillators and training were supplied by Tom Jackson Assistant Community Responder Officer East South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

Blandford RFC success at the RFU Presidents Awards

On Sunday the 1st of June, Blandford RFC sent two representatives to Twickenham to a presentation at which they managed to get through to the final six in the Presidents Awards category for the Club Management, which recognises the effectiveness and the efficiency of the club committee, to manage and develop and make it a successful modern rugby club.

Club Chairman Justin Frampton and Club Treasurer Doug Thring received the award on behalf of the club from the RFU President Bob Reeves and ex England star Jason Leonard. Justin said ‘ It is fantastic for a relatively small club like Blandford to get nationally recognised in this way to come in the top six in the country, proves the hard work and commitment of the committee and the club is recognised and we are moving Blandford RFC in the right direction’.

Blandford RFC Defibrillator fund

On Sunday the 1st of December Blandford RFC hosted a tea party in the clubhouse for all members and friends, ranging from 1 year old to 89! There was face painting and games for the kids, with the players serving the teas, cakes were made and donated by very generous supporters and our thanks go out to them. As well as a kids and adults lucky dip there was a raffle with some fantastic prizes all generously given, again our thanks to those supporters all who are named below. The aim of the event was to raise enough money to buy, two defibrillators, one for the clubhouse in Blandford town centre and one to be taken with the teams on game days, the one at the clubhouse will be mounted on the outside of the club and will be available for the towns use as well, as there are no defibrillators in Blandford town centre. Chairman Justin Frampton says, "A huge thank you to JoJo Wylde for all her organising with the help of her committee, they were responsible for the whole event. The amount raised on the day is just short of £2000 with 4 silent auction lots still to be sold, the total will hopefully be over £2750, this will allow us to buy the defibrillators, and become the first club in Dorset and Wilts to have one (both in the clubhouse and pitch side) which we hope we never have to use them. With the defibrillator available for the town and the club, I think it is a very important addition to Blandford."

As well as raising money for the Defibrillators, the Rugby club took part in Movember, with a large number of the players taking part in growing various shaped moustaches, with the winner being Lee Haim.

RFU launches its Young Rugby Ambassadors Programme

Blandford RFC is one of the first group of Young Rugby Ambassadors chosen by the RFU as part of its commitment to develop young volunteers throughout the game.

Aged between sixteen and twenty, and drawn from rugby clubs across England, the Young Rugby Ambassadors will be part of a programme that aims to excite and engage young people in the build-up to and legacy from Rugby World Cup 2015.

Blandford RFC was chosen to be a Young Rugby Ambassador because it is an forward thinking club and one of the first to receive the Club Mark, and RFU Accreditation.

Justin Frampton - Mentor, Ryan Boadwell and Haydn Shafford and other Young Rugby Ambassadors from across the region attended a conference at The Corn Exchange in Exeter on October 31 to launch this RFU initiative. Exeter is one of ten host cities chosen to stage matches during Rugby World Cup 2015.

At the conference they took part in workshops to discuss ideas for community projects to inspire people about rugby, explored different leadership and ambassadorial styles and shared information about RWC 2015.

Quote from Chairman and Mentor Justin Frampton, ''It is very important to encourage young players to take on responsibility's in the club environment, and working as YRA's and encouraging young players back to the game is essential.''

In the build-up to the tournament, Ryan and Haydn and the other Young Rugby Ambassadors will be working in their clubs to pass on the latest news on RWC 2015, get their local communities talking about rugby and will also help to bring back players in the 16-24 age group.

RFU Rugby Development Director Steve Grainger emphasised the benefits of the programme: "We are committed to support the development of young volunteers in our clubs at all levels. This programme will showcase the talents and potential of young people to club administrators, committees and local communities, to engage more young volunteers in the management of rugby clubs.

"These young people represent the best of their generation and they will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the development of the game."

The next group of Young Rugby Ambassadors will be recruited by May next year, along with adult mentors who will work with them in their clubs.

Fundraising for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust

I am running in the 27th Marathon Des Sables in April 2012. Organised by the French this is billed as the toughest footrace on earth. Full details of the race are here.

Briefly, it is a footrace of 250K or thereabouts run in a series of marathons over 6 days in the Sahara, save for day 4 which a run of about 80K. Competitors carry their own kit which must include food for the duration being a minimum of 2000 calories a day, medical kit, cooking stove, compass and apparently a venom pump! The only kit not carried by the competitors is water (rationed at checkpoints) and a tent.

Daytime temperatures are in the range 80-120F.

Having paid all the entrance, travel and associated costs from my own funds all the monies you donate will go to the Weldmar Hospice Trust. Every penny and pound really does help. You don't need me to tell you about how very important their work is and what it means to the patients and families that they support. Please do take the time if you can to look at the hospice website.

If you would like to donate then please visit my JustGiving page.

Thank you. Ben
